Fresh sod installation on a Los Angeles property with clean soil preparation and expert alignment.

There’s no faster way to turn a bare patch of soil into a vibrant, usable green space than installing sod.

Unlike starting from seed, sod gives you an instant, mature lawn with immediate erosion control and curb appeal—an advantage especially important in visually driven cities like Los Angeles, where the landscape is a major part of the first impression.

But “instant lawn” doesn’t mean effortless.

Sod survives only when the groundwork beneath it has been done correctly.

At Bloom Works Landscape, with more than 25 years of experience, we ensure every stage—from preparation to aftercare—is executed with precision so your new lawn develops a strong root system and thrives for years.

Preparation: The True Foundation of Successful Sod

The most critical work happens before any sod touches the ground. Soil conditions will determine whether your new lawn flourishes or fails.

Skipping or rushing this phase is the number one cause of dead or patchy sod.

Preparation begins by completely clearing the area: removing old grass, weeds, roots, stones, and debris.

The surface must be clean so the new sod doesn’t compete with existing growth. After clearing, the soil is thoroughly worked.

In Southern California, the native soil often leans toward compacted or clay-heavy, so we loosen the top several inches and blend in high-quality amendments such as compost or specialized topsoil.

This process improves drainage, boosts nutrient retention, and allows new roots to spread easily.

Once the soil is enriched, grading and leveling create a smooth, even surface that drains properly.

A slight slope away from structures prevents puddling, and the soil is lightly compacted to remove air pockets.

The final elevation sits slightly lower than surrounding hardscape to accommodate the thickness of the sod.

Installation: Timing, Precision, and Perfect Fit

Once the soil is ready, timing becomes crucial. Sod should be installed immediately after delivery—ideally within 12 to 24 hours—to prevent the rolls from drying out.

Installation begins along the straightest edge of the property, such as a walkway or driveway, which sets a clean reference line for the remaining rows.

To achieve a seamless look, the sod is laid in a staggered, brick-like pattern that prevents long visible seams and minimizes erosion.

Edges must meet tightly without overlapping; even the smallest gaps can dry out and leave noticeable lines across the lawn.

Each piece is carefully trimmed around trees, curves, and hardscape edges for a custom fit.

When all sod is in place, a water-filled roller is passed over the area to press the turf firmly into the prepared soil, eliminating pockets of air and accelerating root establishment.

Post-Installation Care: The Days That Determine Everything

The first two weeks after installation are the make-or-break phase for new sod.

During this period, consistent moisture is crucial as the grass begins bonding to the soil beneath it.

The initial watering must thoroughly soak both the sod and the soil underneath.

For the next seven to ten days, the lawn needs frequent, light watering sessions throughout the day to keep it constantly moist.

The goal is to prevent the sod from drying without allowing water to pool for extended periods.

After about ten days, you can gently lift a corner to check for resistance—an indication that the roots are beginning to take hold.

At this stage, watering gradually shifts to longer, less frequent sessions to encourage deeper rooting.

The first mow should be delayed until the grass is firmly anchored, usually between ten and fourteen days after installation.

The mower should be set high, removing no more than one-third of the blade length.

Featured Snippet Opportunity: “How long does new sod take to root?”

New sod typically forms shallow roots within 10–14 days, making it difficult to pull up.

Full root establishment—deep enough for regular use and reduced watering—usually takes 4–6 weeks when proper preparation and irrigation are followed.
